Established in the mid 1800's as part of the route to the gold
diggings at Woods Point, Marysville is an historic little
village. In the 1900’s Marysville was a popular honeymooners
spot with numerous guest houses thriving in the village. Some
of the original properties still existed until Feb 7th,
2009 when the Black Saturday bushfires razed almost every
structure in the village including many of the historic remnants
that remained. Out of 500 homes and businesses just 20
survived, but each day another house or shop starts on it
journey of rebirth.
Today Marysville is rebuilding from the bottom up. What took
120 years the first time, will no doubt take many years to be
totally rebuilt. And rebuild we are doing, bigger and better than
ever.
Marysville still has the beautiful Oak tree lined street for
which it was so famous, as well as the Steavenson river making
its way right through the heart of the village. Hugging its
banks are parks and gardens offering a cool spot for a summer
picnic and cafes are making great coffee and superb cakes.
Marysville was always known as a village for all seasons
because:-
-
In summer the cool alpine air is a relief from the city heat
-
Autumn brings the glory of the fiery reds and oranges of
European trees
-
Winter has Jack Frost nipping at your nose and the evocative
smell of wood smoke and
-
Spring sees bulbs, blossoms and dormant trees bursting into
life heralding the start of a new cycle.
This of course still stands. |
